1. Add a router to between your broadband modem and your computers. This will add an additional layer via a hardware barrier between the internet and your PCs/laptops.

2. Install a good antivirus program. Microsoft Security Essentials, Avast Home Edition, and Avira Personal Edition are all excellent free antivirus programs available for download via the internet. If you want something a little more robust that requires less user intervention, you can purchase a solution such as Kaspersky Internet Security, Trend Micro’s Titanium, ESET Nod32, or a host of others. These pay solutions have more built-in tools to shield your system from emerging threats.

     a. http://www.microsoft.com/security_essentials
b. http://www.avast.com/free-antivirus-download
c. http://www.avira.com/en/avira-free-antivirus

3. Patch your operating system by using Windows Update. Simply open Internet Explorer and go to Tools, Windows Update and follow the prompts to download and install the latest updates to your OS.

4. Utilize the free tools available to you, like Malwarebytes, Spybot Search & Destroy, Advanced SystemCare, Free Internet Eraser, etc. No antivirus solution, free or fee, protects you from everything. However, used in conjunction with some of the free tools mentioned above, you should be able to keep your machine virus and spyware free with minimal effort, reducing downtime and increasing productivity.

5. Additional steps include spam filters and email scanners that will limit your exposure from email threats
